Joseph Smith Jr. was the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, also known as Mormonism. He was born on December 23, 1805, in Sharon, Vermont. At the age of 14, he claimed to have had a vision in which he saw God the Father and Jesus Christ, which led to his belief in his divine calling as a prophet. In 1827, he claimed to have received golden plates from an angel, which he later translated into the Book of Mormon, the central text of the Latter Day Saint faith.
Smith established the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fayette, New York, in April 1830. He led the church until his death on June 27, 1844, when he was assassinated by a mob in Carthage, Illinois. Despite his controversial teachings and practices, the Latter Day Saint movement has grown to become a significant religion, with millions of followers worldwide.
